1.
2.Writing is a technology because it is a tool that we use to organize information. Writing is a means to an end and it is useful, therefore it is a technology.
3. The pencil is definitely a technology, it is a tool that is a means to an end, it makes a task easier and faster like many technologies do. Pencil's also have a lot of work and thought put into them, they aren't as simple people think. Finally pencils are an improvement on other communications tools which themselves are considered technologies, therefore the pencil is a technology.
4.Plato thought that writing would weaken our memories and he didn't trust the authenticity of the written word.
5. A pro of writing is that it is a good way to keep records. Another is that writing can bridge space and time when a direct interaction is not possible. Writing has uniformity which makes it a good bases to judge things by. But cons of writing are that it can't interact, it can be fraud and needs authenticity.
6 Thoreau's family owned a pencil factory. Thoreau used pencils to write and the money he used to go live in the woods came from selling pencils, not royalties on writing. And Thoreau even spent ten years of his life improving the pencil making process.
7.the phone is just like other communications technologies in that it came, few people used it and almost everyone was skeptical about it, it became widespread, it became accepted, and finally it made its own mark on how we communicate. Phones changed the way we talk, formal introductions and farewells became widely used and people had to learn how to talk differently for phone conversations.
8. With new digital technologies it is now easier for fraud to be committed, also new technologies give people more mediums to commit fraud. Fraud makes the computer less trustworthy and therefore unauthentic as a technology right now, but all technologies were un authentic in the beginning. Fraud has taught us not to trust everything that we read and now we have adapted to that and take everything with a grain of salt.
9. What the author is saying is that when a technology first comes out no one likes it and hates what it does. Then when it becomes accepted it changes the way we used to do things and that same hated technology becomes essential and loved.
10. This authors definition of literacy is simple: being able to adapt to and use technologies, and eventually use the new technology to not only improve old processes, but make new ones.

1. developing new models of writing
designing a new curriculum supporting these models
creating models for teaching that curriculum

2. In spite of, cultures that hate writing, being a woman, being black, being too young.

3. We  (the public in general, everyone alive now, and everyone that will live from now on) need to write more freely and more constantly, and we need a new way to teach people to write more.

4. Because reading could control society where as writing allows society to break control and do what it wants. Reading creates feelings of intimacy and warmth while writing creates feelings unpleasantness and hard work. Yes I remember reading a good book all last thanksgiving break, or reading another book on the porch at the beach. Or my reading chair in my room.

5. Writing is hard labor. Writing is linked with testing. Basically writing makes you think of everything that sucks about academics like essays or say....blogposts.

6. Process writing is the combined process of how most students and authors write their papers, and those common factors of writing were taken and became process writing: invention, drafting, peer review, reflection, revising, rewriting, and publishing.

7. self sponsored writing is a form a writing that belongs to the author and not an institution. The writing is completely free and is composed for anyone from strangers to the authors peers. I don't do any self sponsored writing myself except for the rare facebook status or occasional instagram caption.

8. The 21st century is the age of composition because more people than ever now are composing just for the sake of participating. Basically everyone in some small way is a composer and is contributing to the world. Literacy is now equally split among print literacy, social network literacy, and digital literacy. Now literacy means being literate in everything, on and off the web.

9. The so what of this article, is that the definition of literacy isn't begining to change, It has already changed and is still changing rapidly. Now Literacy is not one definite thing such as understanding print and computer articles, literacy encompases everything from newspapers to tweets and internet videos.

10. Literacy in this article is defined as being able to write just as well as one can read. And that one should be able to read and write every genre and over every kind of media, from pictographs to complex essays, and everything in between digital or not.

1. 1 Tompsons main argument is that social media has actually made things less private and more intimate, where as people thought the internet would make things less intimate and more private.
2 Social media is both a positive and negative thing as now you can build better weak relataionships and keep strong ones strong, but you now have everyone know everything about you.
3You have to play the game now or else others will play it for you and decide what you look like to the online world, which by the way is becoming more intertwined with the real world.

2.Mark added the newsfeed to make it easier to find info about your friends on Facebook. It was too hard to individually go to each person and search their info. The news feed made it so that you just had to look in one place to find someones info but now everyting all your friends do is in one place. But it also took away any aspect of privacy that facebook had. In a literary sense this is bad because it is lazyness and lack of deep thought, but on the other hand this is good because the information you aquire through news feed doesn't require deep thought and therefore less time spent on it is more time you can spend thinking about real info.

3. ambient awarness is having a deeper insight into someone's life than you knew you had. You can pick up on the small things in their life that you might not if you didn't have social media. everyone experinces ambient awareness even me

4. The paradox of ambient awarnes is that even though it is a small low type of awareness where you don't really know the person, over time and several tweets you actually know the person very well and can pick up on small things that you otherwise wouldn't pick up on.

5. An ambient update is something small like "feeling better" that by itself is meaningless but take with other posts can mean, "feeling better" from the flu. to "feeling better" after being shot. It lets the person know a small bit of the person's life, that they are feeling better and now you at least know they were feeling worse at some point.

6. Social media is skimmable and that relates to present literacy in that people aren't reading as long and they aren't thinking deeply into what they read as much anymore. But that isn't bad, when it comes to books and articles people should read more and think deeper, but when it comes to social media posts, people really don't need to read a lot or think deeply because the author didn't intend much behind each post. Also because of the paradox of ambient awarness, one just needs to read a lot of little posts rather than think a lot about a few posts to garnish deeper meaning.

7. Our weak ties on social media are not really friends at all, they are acquaintances though, and social media helps people develop lots of these weak ties. These weak ties are helpful because it people a wide network of people whenever they need help with something.

8. 20 something year olds feel pressured to stay on social media sites because if they don't stay active building and maintaing their image, someone else will define their image for them. The name of the game is defense, and if you don't play then you don't get to decide how you are perceived on the internet.

9. This article defines literacy as being able to sift through the multitudes of data on social networking sites in order to determine what a person is like by unconciously adding up all their posts and putting together a story of their life. Thompson describes being literate as reading quickly enough not to waste time, but still able to determine what is going on in hundreds of peoples lives through social networking sites.

10. This whole thing was so very very long, I almost wanted to cry a little, Helen probably did cry, Avery certainly cried.
Shirky is making the argument that media is no longer a one directional stream. Media now is divided up into consuming, producing, and sharing. Right now the most of the population is on the "consume" setting of media. The internet streams 1 trillion hours of tv a year that is consumed. Shirky is arguing that more of the time spend consuming could go to producing and sharing which could have a very positive effect on society as a whole. Shirky is saying that the change is coming soon with the new generation which is raised to not only consume, but interact with their media and then share what they made. This article coincides with the other two articles in that to be literate now is to be able to surf the web and read books and watch movies. But this article goes deeper in that it takes for granted that being literate is the ability to think deeply, this article just assumes that that is a basic part of being literate. This article goes on to say the being literate will soon mean producing and sharing a lot more than we do now. Shirky says that we will spend less time consuming and more time producing and that will help the population as a whole. Being literate will soon mean not watching culture from the outside, but making culture, and becoming an integral part of media and culture itself. This article matters because it goes beyond what Literacy is now and talks about what literacy will be like and require in the near future. This article finishes the scrooge story of literacy by giving us a glimpse of the future in addition to the present and past.

The repletion of "cognitive surplus" lets the reader know what really matters to Shirky. "Cognitive Surplus" is the amount of time that people have not being used by work, Cognitive surplus is the free time that we have that can be used for either consumption or production of media. Unfortunately now consumption is the name of the game when it comes to "cs" but the tide is beginning to turn to the direction of producing and sharing media rather than just consuming it. Shirky is saying that if we spend 1% of our tv time producing, we could make the equivalent of 100 total wikipedia's a year, not wikipedia pages, but the collective wikipedia as a whole. Shirky is saying that no one knows what will come of all this producing, but will millions of man hours and infinite ideas, he's betting there will be some positive projects that are beneficial to society.

The article claims  that the increased use of the internet in place of reading print is changing the way we think. We used to have to think deep and take our time to understand the text that we read, but now we can access all the information we want and we don't really have to think or process the information. The internet has all the information we want but it also comes with distractions that keep you from focusing on the text for too long or focusing on the text too deeply. As the internet becomes more intelligent and more human, we become more machinelike with less thought processing.
The internet has made it easier for us to find information and thus it makes us not work as hard for the information we want. The internet distracts us from our deep thought and reflection so much that we tend not to do it anymore. Study's haven't shown how, but the internet is changing the way we think and rewiring our neural pathways.
Literacy in this article is defined pretty much the same, except instead of speech being in danger, its print. Literacy is the deep thought and reflection of processing either text or thoughts themselves to gain deeper insight into them. In this article alone literacy is defined as being able to think about and analyze print over a generous amount of time as opposed to skimming and article over a few minutes.
The internet has changed the thought and reading processes of many people in that people are now more efficient. People take less time to think about an article or even read it for that matter, they just skim over the text for a few minutes and then skip on to something else interesting they saw on the web. The internet is broadening what people read rather than making people think deeper into what they read. The author uses older changes in technology to demonstrate what people thought about changes similar to this and how they actually turned out such as the transition to mechanical clocks. He also brings up how changes in medium change the way we write and read just like how Nietzsche changed what he wrote when he changed how he wrote. And finally he brought up HAL and how it was more emotional, more human, than the actual humans because the actual humans lost the reasoning skills of deep thought. This evidence was very effective for the singular reason that it showed relevance throughout different situations and examples. It was different but it all helped prove a different part of the same point. The article's answer to the "so what" question is that as we rely more on the internet we lose the ability to think deeply into text and thought. This topic matters because it is a phenomenon that is happening right now, the reader should take away that they should take more time reading and not get distracted.

I'm choosing to write my paper on Rihanna's Instagram because her's has lots of pictures that actually speak to her character. She has lots of posts that have comments and she sets a definite opinion of herself on there. Her pictures actually give insight into her life instead of just promoting her career. I think that she is one of the few people who posts what she wants to and not what it best for her to post which means I can actually figure something out from her Instagram instead of most other celebrities' instagrams out there. Her identity through instagram is shown to be that of a bad girl who doesn't care what other people think. She is also a bit of a party girl and she enjoys life, she has pictures from all over the world and of her at events. She is also a bit unstable and gets made at what other people say so deep down she probably actually cares what people think. She has lots of pictures of her in little to no clothes which I think means she's trying to give off the image of being confident and not caring. But the amount of those pictures might hint to her trying to overcompensate. She is also a Breaking Bad fan.

1.My Instagram and Facebook Timeline reveal that I am a fun loving, social person, who is a bit adventurous, and I don't make a big deal out of things. And Also I'm really really Awesome.

3. These posts and pictures are all pretty much social and interactive which show that I am a guy who likes to hang out with people and that I'm not a loner. They show that I have a sense of humor and am not afraid to make fun of myself a little bit. Im a bit adventurous and really try to live the fun side of life.

4. I might feel a little bit that I have to have some social media presence just so my friends away at different colleges can see what I'm up to. But I also do it just because its fun and doesn't take up much time. I of course feel pressured to censor myself, I know future employers will look at my life and I can't show anything that portrays me as irresponsible, plus once I put something out there it is there for good.

5. I would definitely still get the job I don't put anything bad on my social media, if anything social media would help me get the job because I am portrayed as a fun likable guy. Also there are no photos or posts about me doing anything illegal or stupid, besides the hot wings Instagram.

Analysis of Closing Time song and video.

“Closing Time”- The bar is closing=go home goodbye, its over
“Open all the doors and let you out into the world”- time to go outside, into the world, perhaps leaving the bar to go do something real, or ending a chapter of your life and its time to go forth into the real world
“closing time”-repetition=important
“Turn all of the lights on over every boy and every girl”- turn on the lights could mean wake up and get ready to go, and every boy and girl= everyone in the bar or world
“one last call for alcohol so finish your whiskey or beer”- obviously closing time so last chance to get booze, or last chance to have fun and relax before the real world. Or last chance to grab a drink with the girl you want.
“you don’t have to go home but you can’t stay here”-the bar or school or parents don’t care what happens to you next, but you cant stay here. You have to act now, maybe get the girl and go home with her or get a job, but the easy time is over, DO SOMETHING
“I know who I want to take me home” (3X) – the girl that he wants to be with, he hopes he goes home with her from the bar, or maybe she comes and picks him up because she cares. But he wants her.
“Time for you to go out to the places you will be from”-time to make a new home(where you will be from) or (who you will be with) go to those places and start a new beginning, cause this part of life or relationship status is over. Go to a new home, although it won’t feel like it for a while, and neither will the new girl seem as right as the old one for a while.
“This room won’t open till your brothers or your sisters come/So gather up your jackets, move it to the exits/I hope you have found a friend”-Get your stuff(affairs in order, or your lady) and go forth! This place wont be ready until you do what you need to do and have established relationships(bros and sisters) and also the next generation of people to the “bar”. Hope you found a friend, either an actual friend to help you out later in life or have fun with after the bar. Or found your lady friend.
“Every new beginning comes from some other beginnings end”- your new chapter in life has to come at the expense of the old one, high school to college. Or you get the girl and you are finally moving on from your old girl, but you are happy with the new one. Or the more sad version which happens in the video, the guy doesn’t find the girl, therefore its “closing time” he gives up on her, but its bittersweet because “every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end” so that means because he gave up on this girl another one is right around the corner.
The music video has two camera shots the entire video and the timing of the video has to match up perfectly for it to work. Much the way the timing of the man and the woman in the video is focused on, they never quite get to meet each other, they always miss each other barely. This could be that the timing of their relationship was not right due to the man the woman or other circumstances. This relates to Friends with Benefits because the timing of the feelings in the fwb relationship between the two main characters is all wrong until the very end of the movie. TIMING.

This newest movie version of The Great Gatsby had to do something to stand out from the other 5 Great Gatsby movies. Why? Because all the other Great Gatsby movies were absolutely terrible. The Great Gatsby is known as the great American novel that can not be made into a great movie. All versions of the Great Gatsby, while some may have done well in the box office, have been labeled as horrible movies. So director Baz Luhrumann decided to try something different with his adaption with GG. He has already turned Romeo and Juliet into a contemporary film in a modern time. So what Baz did with GG was he kept the setting of the film in 1922, but he decided to blend the jazz music of 1922 with contemporary upbeat rap/hip hop music to create a unique musical score for the film. Baz brought in huge names in the music industry such as Jay Z, Beyonce, Will.I.AM, and many more. The rap music blended into the jazz gives the film an old feeling of the 1920's but it also adds a new hip cool feeling to the film to keep it feeling exciting, just as jazz music was new and exciting in the 20's. The unexpected music added something different to the film which hopefully made it different enough from the other films so that it is not bad. I think the music definitely fit in with the mood of the movie in the fact that it was new and exciting, the song "Bang Bang" fit in perfectly with the party scene to give it an exciting cool kinda weird feel to it. All in all I would say that the new music certainly didn't hurt the movie.

I didn't fully follow the process that the book describes in that section. But writing a rough draft is always necessary. My rough drafts usually arent that rough because what I like to do is put a lot of effort into them and most of my planning before hand. That way when I write my rough draft I just do it very well and then I just have to edit it. One thing that is very rough about the rough drafts I write is the grammar and spelling. I am an awful speller so I usually just let autocorrect take care of the problem. And if autocorrect doesn't take care of the spelling problem I just keep typing and fix it when I am done with the paper or done writing for the day. Grammar I usually just rely on re reads to catch the grammar errors and then rely on peer edits to catch the rest of the issues. I think writing multiple drafts is stupid and a waste of time unless the draft actually sucks a lot. I think you should just polish the draft a lot and do what you need to do to fix it if it is fairly good to begin with. The mandatory drafts you made us do definitely made me begin my paper early. Please keep setting mandatory draft days early because as soon as you give us one I usually try and do more than necessary and end up finishing early.

1. "Versus"  4X
2.  "crossfire" 3X- name of show implies arguing and combat and violence
3. "partisan hackery" 2X
4. Thread- versus, unique perspectives, fight, hate, attack, confronting- all these imply negative and uncivilized discourse that is only about theatre to get viewers. The show does not want to actually display opposing viewpoints equally, rather it wants to play aggressive people off each other for show.
5. politicians&corporations (evil, only want money/attention) Vs. people&America (good, needs honest news)
6. "stop hurting America"- America needs good news reporting and actually debate shows to stay informed. Instead shows like crossfire mislead americans into thinking that they are getting good information when actually they are just receiving false partisan theatre designed to get ratings and cause controversy, which doesnt really help America at all.
7. Two views of the 2 shows and 2 different types of media begin to appear. CNN and crossfire and fake, uncivilized, violent, theatre pieces, while Jon stewart show is real, and has civilized discourse and doesnt ask pointed questions to start arguments, rather it asks questions to get the person who is being interviewed opinion.
8. So What?- America needs more honest fair civilized shows like Jon Stewart's show, and no shows like crossfire anymore. So What? America would be a better place without those false shows.

HS Writing Process

My writing process in high school was very effective. I usually made A's on all my papers and I think that is because the teachers gradually eased us into the more difficult writing. But as of last year my process in writing a paper or essay is as follows. At first my teacher would tell us that an assignment was coming up, if the paper was about a book we were reading then I would think about what I could use in the book when writing my paper later and prepare accordingly. If the paper was not about a book then I would go straight to ignoring the teacher and start thinking about what I was going to write about. I would occasionally think about some ideas, and then when the teacher told us a brainstorm would do my ideas would come out pretty easily and I would then form a solid plan. The what came next was research and finding quotes which is tedious, but not too bad. The hardest part of the process for me is writing the outline. This is the hardest worst part of the process because here is where I basically write my paper and know exactly how it will turn out. I have to plan out where everything will be and how the transitions will work and basically write my paper then. The next part is easy. I just have to fill in my outline and turn short sentences into longer more advanced trains of thought that become my paper. I pick out good vocab words that will look good in the paper, and basically make the paper long enough, advanced enough, and good looking enough to get an A. My paper goes from a short 2-3 page outline, to a beautiful near perfect essay. One hard part at the end though is often the conclusion because by that time I'm often tired, and usually out of ideas, I feel redundant writing my conclusion because I've already said all those things before. I would love to write a 2-3 sentence conclusion that gets the job done. But I have to stretch it out and become stupid and wordy just because the teacher needs a longer concluding paragraph. Which is stupid, I clearly can write a paper seeing as how I just did before the conclusion. Anyways, that was my typical process of writing papers or essays in high school.
